Patch 11 and 12 now available on Steam

12/14/2022

As the year wraps up, we decided to make Patch 11 and Patch 12 available to players on Steam. You can switch to these versions by simply following the steps below.

Note that these builds have known issues that were fixed in later versions. Recent save files might also be corrupted if you use them with previous builds. Before reporting any issues, please switch to the latest version and double check whether you still have problems.
  1. Right click Outer Wilds in your library, and click Properties.
  2. Select the Betas tab, and select the build you want to switch to.
  3. An Update will be queued for the game. Once it completes, you’ll be on the version you selected.
  4. If you want to go back to the latest version of Outer Wilds, follow the same steps and select “None” for the Beta Branch.

Thanks and happy holidays, explorers!

Hotfix: PS5 Render Modes Now Live

12/12/2022

As a solution for the judder/stutter issue on the PS5 version of Outer Wilds, we’ve added a PS5-specific feature called Render Modes. Render Modes provide different options for visual fidelity and framerate, allowing players without VRR-enabled displays to have a smooth experience.

Render modes include:
  • 1440p/60fps (default)
  • 2160p/30fps
  • Dynamic/60fps

With this update, the default Render Mode is now 1440p/60fps. This mode reduces the resolution across the game to a locked 1440p and 60fps, eliminating judder. The 2160p/30fps Render Mode is similar, but instead locks the game at 2160p (a.k.a. 4k) and 30fps. Use this mode if you want the highest resolution and don’t mind a lower framerate.

The Dynamic/60fps Render Mode is the same settings profile as before the hotfix, and remains as close to 2160p at 60fps as possible, but framerate drops may cause judder as before on non-VRR displays.

If your display supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), we highly suggest using the Dynamic/60fps Render Mode. This should result in a smooth framerate and clean image quality.

That's it for this update!
Thank you to our PS5 players for your understanding and support as we tackled this issue. And as always, keep exploring!

Best,
Mobius

A hotfix is now available on PC

11/14/2022

Players with NVIDIA graphics cards: A hotfix for the screen going black or being obscured by purple fog in certain situations is now live on PC! If you previously rolled back your graphics drivers to work around this issue, you may now safely update them.

Heads up that the fix is still rolling out on Windows Store but should be available shortly.

Edit: A second hotfix is now out on PC for a more minor bug caused by the Nvidia driver updates. These two hotfixes cover all issues related to the driver update that we're aware of.

That's it for this update
Thanks to everyone who reached out to report this issue, and be sure to let us know if anything else goes awry at support@mobiusdigitalgames.com!

A hotfix is now available on ps5

9/20/2022

A hotfix that provides a workaround for juddering/stuttering on PS5 is now live!  If you've encountered this problem, try disabling the new VSync option in the in-game graphics menu.

If your TV or monitor supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), we highly suggest that you play with that feature enabled instead of disabling VSync. This should result in a smooth framerate and clean image quality.

Note this is a stopgap hotfix, as disabling VSync will result in visible screen tearing. We are working to find a good middle-ground solution for players without VRR support.

For more info about VRR: https://blog.playstation.com/2022/04/25/variable-refresh-rate-support-for-ps5-is-rolling-out-this-week/

That's the End of This Update

Thanks for your support and keep exploring!

Outer Wilds lands on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S!

9/15/2022

Outer Wilds is now available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S! These ports use next-gen powers to allow spacefaring at 4k 60fps. Note that the release may roll out unevenly, so there might be slight delays getting the download onto your console.
These ports are technically upgrades. We’ll dive into some common questions about what that means below.
FAQ’s:
Wasn’t Outer Wilds already out on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
  • Previously, next-gen consoles emulated the PS4 and Xbox One X versions of Outer Wilds. Playing these was not recommended because players could run into sections that weren’t optimized for the next-gen consoles, and encounter other backwards compatibility issues such as controller input lag. The new ports are custom built for next-gen consoles to solve these issues and take performance further than before.
Is upgrading from the old version to the new version free?
  • Yes!
Is the upgrade available through PlayStation Plus and Game Pass?
  • Yes! The free upgrade should be available through Game Pass, PS+, PS+ Extra, and PS+ Premium.
Does the disc version get the free upgrade?
  • Yes!
How do I upgrade if I have the Archaeologist Edition?
  • Players with the Archaeologist Edition will need to upgrade the base game and Echoes of the Eye separately on their respective store pages.
Can I keep my previous save?
  • Yes, if you have a save file linked to your account you’ll get a one-time prompt to switch it over. Make sure you’re online and logged into the account containing your old save.
Can I keep my trophies?
  • Unfortunately, trophies will need to be earned again.
How to update the game on PS5:
If you have the PS4 version of Outer Wilds already downloaded on PS5:
Picture
1. Navigate to Outer Wilds in your Games Library. Select the three dots next to “Play Game.” Choose “Select Version” in the dropdown.
Picture
2. Choose the PS5 version.
Picture
3. Select “Download.”
If you own Outer Wilds but the PS4 version isn’t downloaded on your PS5:
Picture
1. Navigate to Outer Wilds in your Games Library.
Picture
2. Select PS5 on the “Which version do you want to view?” screen.
Picture
3. Select "Download."
That’s the End of This Update
Whether you’ve been around the solar system or have yet to lift off, we hope you enjoy exploring on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S! Though these consoles are new and shiny, we promise the ship is still held together with good old duct tape and tree sap.

As always, you can reach us via email to report any issues.

Thanks for your support and keep exploring!

A wild Fan Content Policy appears!

5/19/2022

We are constantly amazed by all the wild and wonderful fan art made by the Outer Wilds community. However, we’ve also been struggling to keep up with requests to review or give permission for use of Mobius Digital IP. In response, we decided that we too should become a cool, hip game studio with a fan art policy.

We want this policy to enable you all to continue to make Outer Wilds and other Mobius Digital related fan works. We spent a lot of time crafting it, reviewing other studio policies, and incorporating feedback from our legal team. However, we want to make sure this policy and FAQ are clear and answer the most common questions, so if you have questions or feedback, please let us know! Either by commenting on this blog post or emailing us at support@mobiusdigitalgames.com. We’re a small team, so won’t be able to respond to every message, but we’ll do our best!

Read our Fan Content Policy here.

Thank you again – from the bottom of our hearts – for being such a great community of creative, curious, and wonderful people.

Cheers,
