Hello friends! It’s Alice, your favorite Mobius Digital artist. Our ever-so-hardworking producer, Avimaan, threatened-I mean, requested, that I make a little post about my art process. So here we are! If you haven’t noticed, the art in Beacon 38 is pretty out there. We wanted to create a world that contained creatures and objects far beyond the realm of what was normally expected in a fantastical outer space setting. The creature we’ll go through today is actually on the tamer side of my designs, I would say, hehe. The first step is to have a discussion with Loan, the Creative Lead, about what the creature is and what components it has. He also throws in a few ideas about how it could look. Then, he leaves me alone, and I get to work! I start out with some sketches. Here we have the Switchgate Plant: Hey everyone! My name is Loan Verneau, official dentist here at Mobius Digital. As such, I am in charge of caring for the placement and health of the teeth of our wonderful creatures! Yesterday was quite an exciting day for I took care of my most valued customer who, with no less than 40 teeth, is very proud of his smile. Now, while the job might sound trivial, it often requires detailed knowledge of the widely different morphology of my clients. Thankfully, I am helped in that regard by our expert on 38th dimension creature morphology: Alice Li. She provides me with the detailed schematics like this one. But my job doesn't stop at Prosthodontics. Once that is done, starts a long and arduous orthodontic process to help the creature move its jaw and align its teeth correctly when eating. I hear astronauts are on the menu tonight and it would be a shame for my client to miss the party.
We're really proud of the core mechanic of Terra Chroma, which requires a player to get from the Start to the End of a level by using a limited number of (Tetris) puzzle pieces. If the player runs out of puzzle pieces and specialty items before they reach the End, they have to restart the puzzle.
As players go through the game they can learn new puzzle piece shapes to tackle new challenges thrown at them. The puzzles are procedurally generated, so there's an endless amount of fun to be had in the Terra Chroma world! Terra Chroma is now available on the App Store and Google Play. Are the Fluo Cuddlers, these cute little guys that react to your sonar pings as you traverse through this alien world. Based off playtesting feedback, we realized we needed to make the ways the player reacts with the world clearer as well as make the environment feel more alive as a whole. The Fluo Cuddlers are the first step towards making the world richer and more responsive. Let us know what you think! --The Mobius Dev Team We're excited to playtest Beacon 38 today! We're going to have our first real feedback outside the studio on our level design. Beacon 38 is a daunting exploration of an unforgiving, beautiful alien world for iOS and Android. I wonder if any of our players will find this cosmonaut out in space... Have a great weekend!
It's your favorite Audio Lead here again! Probably the single most influential music for me thus far on Beacon 38 has been Sacred Harp singing. Now, Sacred Harp is fascinating not only musically, but historically as well. Sacred Harp, or "Shape Note Singing", was designed for non-singers. It grew up in the American South in the mid 1800s movement known as "The Second Great Awakening". Singers would gather in large squares and were encouraged to bellow notes at the top of their lungs, hitting the pitch as best they can. Sacred Harp has found a revival among musical communities and continues to be performed today. One of my favorite Sacred Harp tunes has never been sung as well as I've found in this video. It's exactly the amateur quality of Sacred Harp that creates a haunting quality I'm striving for in Beacon 38. The sound of a hundred voices simply moving air is electrifying to me. It is profoundly human in its flaws. If you'd like to listen to some more, I've created a playlist of my favorites right here: Beacon 88 Playlist 3
Sean again!
As promised here's another playlist to give you an example of what inspires my vision of our game's music. This one is not for the faint of heart. Warning: Contains METAL! RAWRRRGG. |
